How to Write a Good News Update

When most people think of news, they may imagine black-and-white journalism in major newspapers or a nightly recap on television. However, a news update can also be a simple story about an event that happened within a business or organization. Businesses often create these stories to spread information about their achievements to employees and the public. They might highlight new products or services, recognition for major projects or initiatives, or a new location opening up. Framing company news as a news article makes it less likely to be seen as advertising, and can help readers to take the information seriously.

In many cases, the most important information for a news update should be presented at the beginning of the article. This is known as the inverted pyramid method, and it helps to ensure that even those who only skim the content will be able to get the key facts. The remainder of the content should provide a supporting background to the main news.

The news update should avoid introducing the writer’s personal opinion on the subject matter unless there is an excellent reason to do so. The writer should always try to interview a subject, or at least use a quote from that person’s public statement, rather than writing their own interpretation of events.
